From the Farm, 5/5/14: Ross wins Cal League honor

Right-handed pitcher Joe Ross celebrated being named the California League Pitcher of the Week Monday night by picking up his third win of the season.

Ross, however, wasn’t quite as sharp Monday night as he was last week. He allowed four runs on six hits with no walks and four strikeouts over six innings in Single-A Lake Elsinore’s 7-4 win over Lancaster in Lake Elsinore.

Ross, 20, the 25th overall pick in the 2011 draft and the younger brother of Padres starter Tyson Ross, won the award for shutting out Visalia over six innings with a career-high nine strikeouts. Ross is 3-2 this season with a 2.58 earned run average.

Monday’s win boosted Lake Elsinore to 20-12 on the season. Recently-acquired shortstop had two doubles in three at-bats with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Right-hander Ben Paullus (2.87 ERA) allowed a hit with a strikeout in a scoreless inning. Left-hander Brandon Alger (1.80 ERA) allowed a hit with a strikeout in 1 1/3 innings to pick up his first save.

ON THE MOVE: Catcher Rocky Gale was activated from Triple-A El Paso’s disabled list and filled the roster spot created when first baseman-outfielder Kyle Blanks was promoted to the Padres.  Right-handed pitchers Tony Wieber and Eric Yardley were promoted to Single-A Fort Wayne from extended spring training. Catcher Ryan Miller and right-handed pitcher Erik Cabrera were sent from Fort Wayne to extended spring training.

Around the Farm:

TRIPLE-A EL PASO (13-18): CHIHUAHUAS 13, Sacramento 10 – SS Jake Lemmerman hit a walk-off grand slam for El Paso, which won its fourth straight at Southwest University Park. It was El Paso’s second grand slam of the night and the third in the game. 1B Tommy Medica also homered with the bases loaded for the Chihuahuas. Lemmerman was 3-for-4 with the homer, a double five RBIs and three runs scored. Medica was 2-for-5 with five RBIs. C Adam Moore (.356) was 4-for-5. 2B Brooks Conrad (.312) was 3-for-5 with two doubles, a RBI and two runs scored. RF Jeff Francoeur was 2-for-5 with a double and a RBI. Starting RHP Matt Wisler struggled in his Triple-A debut, allowing six runs on eight hits and four walks in three innings. RHP Bandon Kloess (7.67 ERA)allowed a hit with a walk in two scoreless innings. RHP Blaine Boyer allowed two hits with three strikeouts in two scoreless innings. RHP Hector Ambriz (1-0, 1.62 ERA) pitched a perfect ninth to get the win.

DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (13-17): CORPUS CHRISTI 6, Missions 3 – Starting RHP John Hussey (1-1, 3.95 ERA) allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits and a walk in four innings. RHPs Adys Portillo (1.80 ERA) and Leonel Campos (0.00 ERA) both allowed a hit with a strikeout in a scoreless inning.

SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (12-18): LANSING 4, Tin Caps 2 – Starting LHP Payton Baskette (0-1, 3.21 ERA) allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. CF Mallex Smith was 2-for-4 with a triple and stole his 20th base. Fort Wayne has committed  62 errors in 30 games resulting in 41 unearned runs.
