From the Farm, 5/9/14: Four Players Honored
Center fielders Alberth Martinez and Mallex Smith, right-handed starting pitcher Zach Eflin and infielder Fernando Perez have been named the Players of the Month in the Padres farm system.
Martinez, 23, was named the Hitter of the Month for batting .306 in 27 games with Single-A Lake Elsinore. He had nine doubles, three homers, 17 RBIs and a team-leading 18 runs scored. Ten walks gave the native of Venezuela a .365 on-base percentage, which coupled with a .468 slugging percentage gave him a .834 OPS.
Smith, who turned 21 on May 6, stole 16 bases in April in 22 attempts with Single-A Fort Wayne. The Padres’ fifth-round pick in the 2012 draft finished the month tied for third among all minor league players in steals, although he currently leads with 22 steals. Smith was successful on 16 of 22 attempts. Although he hit only .221 in April, Smith had 11 walks for a .302 on-base percentage. He scored 15 runs in April.
Eflin, 20, was the 33rd overall pick of the in the 2012 draft. He was 4-1 with a 2.80 earned run average in April with Lake Elsinore. He had 29 strikeouts with eight walks in 35 1/3 innings. Rival hitters batted .238 against Eflin in April. He won three straight starts while allowing one run over 17 2/3 innings with 16 strikeouts.
Perez, 20, a Chula Vista resident who played his high school ball at Otay Ranch, made only three errors in April while playing three positions in unseasonably cold conditions at Fort Wayne. He started seven games at first, nine at second and five at third. He also hit .326 with nine doubles, two homers and 18 RBIs in 22 games. He also earned Midwest League Player of the Week honors during the month.
ON THE MOVE: Outfielder Reymond Fuentes was transferred from Triple-A El Paso to Double-A San Antonio. Outfielder-first baseman Xavier Nady was outrighted to El Paso and he has three days to accept or reject the assignment. El Paso temporarily lost right-handed reliever Kevin Quackenbush via a promotion to the Padres. Right-handed relief pitcher Dennis O’Grady was promoted to El Paso from San Antonio.

TRIPLE-A EL PASO (15-19): FRESNO 4, Chihuahuas 4 – Starter Billy Buckner (2-1, 3.45 ERA) allowed six runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. O’Grady stuck out one in 1 1/3 perfect innings after being promoted. Carlos Quentin started in left and was 0-for-3 in his first rehab start with El Paso. C Adam Moore (.367) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. 3B Tyler Greene (.324) was 2-for-4 with a double. 1B Tommy Medica (.297) was 2-for-4. INF Alex Castellanos drove in three runs.
DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (14-18): Missions 5, MIDLAND 3 – 2B Casey McElroy hit a three-run double. CF Rymer Liriano (.248) was 2-for-4 with his sixth homer. C Austin Hedges was 2-for-4. Starting RHP Jesse Hahn (3.20 ERA) allowed two unearned runs on four hits and two walks with five strikeouts in three innings. RHP Matt Branham (1-1, 4.70 ERA) allowed a run on three hits over three innings. LHPs Frank Garces (2.30 ERA) and Jerry Sullivan (1.50 ERA) both allowed a hit and a walk in a scoreless inning. RHP Johnny Barbato (3.00 ERA) picked up his eighth save allowing two hits with two strikeouts in a scoreless ninth.
SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (20-15): Lancaster 3, STORM 2 – Starting RHP Casey Kelly allowed two runs on eight hits with four strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings in the second start of his rehab assignment. 3B Chase Headley was 0-for-2 with a walk and a strikeout as his rehab start continued. The Storm dropped a third straight game. 2B Benji Gonzalez (.389) was 3-for-4. SS Diego Goris was 2-for-3 with a double. C Jeremy Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a double. RHP Cody Hebner (2-1, 1.40 ERA) allowed a run on a hit and two walks in 1 2/3 innings to suffer the loss. LHP Brandon Alger (1.62 ERA) allowed a hit and a walk with two strikeouts in 1 2/3 scoreless innings. RHP Trevor Gott (1.84 ERA) allowed two hits with two walks in a scoreless inning.
SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (13-20): DAYTON 7, TinCaps 4 – C Dane Phillips (.322) was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI. Starting RHP Walker Weickel (7.03 ERA) allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings. RHP Tony Rizzotti (5.25 ERA) allowed a hit and a walk with a strikeout in 2 2/3 scoreless innings. RHP Wilson Santos (0-1, 6.00 ERA) suffered the loss, giving up three runs on two hits and a walk in the eighth. Fort Wayne made five errors.
