From the Farm, 6/10/14: Bauers, Portillo, Smith, Goris win May Honors

BauersHigh5_s735i0jl_w3cd11efSingle-A Fort Wayne first baseman Jake Bauers (hitter), Double-A San Antonio right-handed reliever Adys Portillo (pitcher), Fort Wayne center fielder Mallex Smith (baserunner) and Single-A Lake Elsinore shortstop Diego Goris (defensive) have been named Players of the Month for May in the Padres farm system.

Bauers, 18, was named the Midwest League Player of the Week earlier this week, batted .379 (36-for-95) with five doubles, two triples, and three home runs for 20 RBIs and 23 runs scored in 27 games for Fort Wayne last month. Bauers hit safely in 20 games and also drew 15 walks for a .464 on-base percentage and a .568 slugging percentage for a 1.033 OPS for May.  He had 11 multi-hit games, including five three-hit games.

Bauers, the youngest player in the Midwest League, extended his hitting streak to 16 straight games Tuesday night and is hitting .371 on the season with five doubles, three triples, and five homers for 28 RBIs and 31 runs scored in 40 games. He was the Padres’ seventh-round pick in the 2013 draft.

Portillo, 22, did not allow a run in May over 14 2/3 innings in relief. He allowed seven hits and five walks with 21 strikeouts and one unearned run. Opponents hit .146 against the Venezuelan in May. However, Portillo gave up four runs in three hits and two walks in one inning Tuesday night as his earned run average on the season shot up to 2.27.

Smith, who turned 21 on May 6, won the Baserunner of the Month Award for the second straight month. He stole 25 bases in 34 games in May and leads all of Minor League Baseball with 46 steals this season. He also hit .369 in May (41-for-111) with five doubles, three triples, and seven RBIs with 22 walks. His on-base percentage in May was .480. Smith was the Padres’ fifth-round pick in the 2012 draft. He is hitting .291 on the season.

Goris, 23, made three errors in 29 games in May. He also hit .355 (44-for-124) with nine doubles, a triple and six homers for 21 RBIs in May. The native of the Dominican Republic was drafted by the Padres from Kansas City in the Triple-A phase of the 2012 Rule 5 draft.

 Around the Farm:

TRIPLE-A EL PASO (31-35): NEW ORLEANS 10, Chihuahuas 0 – RF Jake Goebbert (.266) was 2-for-3. Starting RHP Michael Nix (2-2, 5.82 ERA) allowed five runs on six hits and three walks with three strikeouts in five innings. RHP Brandon Kloess (5.96) allowed two hits and two walks with four strikeouts in two scoreless innings. RHP Dennis O’Grady (5.60) gave up five runs on four hits and two walks in an inning.

DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (33-31): MISSIONS 15, Corpus Christi 14 in Futures Game at Minute Maid Park in Houston – 3B Casey McElroy (.246) was 2-for-5 with his fourth homer for five RBIs. CF Rey Fuentes (.284) was 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored. RF Yeison Asencio (.270) was 2-for-5 with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored. DH Jason Hagerty (.258) was 2-for-3 with a double and sixth homer with two runs scored. LF Rymer Liriano (.276) was 2-for-6. 1B Lee Orr hit a two-run homer. Starting RHP Josh Geer (4.40 ERA) allowed seven runs on seven hits (including the first home run he allowed this season) and three walks with four strikeouts in four innings. RHP Jerry Sullivan (3-2, 1.88 ERA) pitched a perfect two-thirds of an inning to get the win. LHP Frank Garces (1.91 ERA) issued a walk with a strikeout in two-thirds of an inning to get his second save.

SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (38-28): The Storm was off Tuesday night.

SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (28-36): LANSING 7, Tin Caps 4 – Smith was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. C Ryan Miller (.267) was also 2-for-4.  Starting RHP Erik Cabrera (3.97 ERA) allowed three runs on four hits and three walks with two strikeouts in six innings. RHP Tayron Guerrero (6-1, 1.06) suffered the loss on an unearned run, allowing the one unearned run on a hit and a walk with one strikeout in 1 2/3 innings.

DOMINICAN PADRES (2-7): ORIOLES 6, Padres 5 (11 innings) – 3B Carlos Sosa (.229) was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. SS Jose Savinon (.375) was 2-for-4 with a RBI. 2B Manuel Vizcaino (.429) was 2-for-4. Starting LHP Ramon Reyes (3.52 ERA) allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and five walks in 3 2/3 innings. RHP Arturo Pena (4.26) allowed an unearned run on one hit and one walk in 2 1/3 innings. RHP Cesar Gonzalez (0-1, 4.26) also suffered a loss on an unearned run, allowing one unearned run on two walks with two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings).

See that coming with SS, Goris, he has been playing amazing for the storms the entire season on defense and hitting, he should be on the move with a promotion soon as all of the Padres Double A Infielders are way below. He got the shot to be a Big Leaguer.
