From the Farm, 6/23/14: Ross, Oramas Sharp
Right-hander Joe Ross, 21, the 25th overall pick of the 2011 draft, was one of three pitchers turning in strong performances in the Padres farm system Monday night.
Ross (7-4, 3.59 earned run average) allowed one run on three hits and a walk with five strikeouts in six innings for Single-A Lake Elsinore at Inland Empire.
Left-hander Juan Pablo Oramas , 23, (4-3, 5.96 ERA) celebrated his return to Triple-A El Paso by allowing two runs on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts in six innings at Omaha.
Right-hander Ernesto Montas, 22, saw his ERA shoot up to 0.46 when he allowed one run on five hits and a walk with two strikeouts in five innings for the Padres of the Dominican Summer League.
Meanwhile, seven players from San Antonio – right-handed pitchers James Needy, Adys Portillo and Luis De La Cruz; left-handed pitcher Frank Garces; catcher Austin Hedges; outfielder Rymer Liriano, and second baseman Casey McElroy – will be playing for the South Tuesday night in the 78th Texas League All-Star Game in North Little Rock, Ark.
Right-handed reliever Johnny Barbato was also named to the South team, but he is on the disabled list with elbow soreness.
Rich Dauer, who last season led San Antonio to its fifth Texas League title since 2002, will manage the South team. San Antonio will also supply the South coaches — Jimmy Jones (pitching), Francisco Morales (hitting), Dan Turner (trainer) and Eric Wood (strength and conditioning).
ON THE MOVE: Oramas was officially promoted from San Antonio to El Paso Monday to replace right-hander Odrisamer Despaigne, who was promoted to the Padres from El Paso. Outfielder Rod Boykin was promoted from the Arizona Rookie Padres to short-season Single-A Eugene. Right-handed pitcher Malcolm Diaz was transferred from the Dominican Summer League Padres to Arizona. Left-handed pitcher Franklyn Vargas signed with the DSL Padres.

TRIPLE-A EL PASO (36-43): Chihuahuas 6, OMAHA 2 – 1B Cody Decker (.260) was 3-for-4 with a double and his seventh homer for two RBIs and two runs scored. C Adam Moore (.301) also hit a solo homer. RHP Keyvius Sampson (6.75 ERA) followed Oramas and allowed a hit and two walks in a scoreless inning. LHP Bobby LaFromboise (4.18) issued a walk with two strikeouts in a scoreless inning. RHP Brandon Kloess (5.93) issued a walk with a strikeout in a scoreless inning.
DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (3-3, 39-37): The Texas League was off Monday and the 78th Texas League All-Star Game will be played Tuesday night in North Little Rock, Ark
SINGLE-A High LAKE ELSINORE (3-2, 43-32): Storm 4, INLAND EMPIRE 2 – LF Corey Adamson (.244) was 2-for-3 with his fourth homer for three RBI. CF Alberth Martinez (.273) hit his seventh homer. SS Diego Goris (.319) was 2-for-4. LHP Chris Nunn (5.06 ERA) followed Ross and allowed one run on a hit with three strikeouts in two innings. LHP Brandon Alger (2.17) struck out two in a perfect ninth to get his fifth save.
SINGLE-A Low FORT WAYNE (2-2, 32-41): The TinCaps were off Monday.
SINGLE-A Short-Season EUGENE (4-5): TRI-CITY 5, EUGENE 1 – Starting RHP Adrian De Horta (0-1, 4.05 ERA) allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts in three innings, RHP Colby Blueberg (0.00) allowed a walk while striking out five in 2 1/3 hitless innings. RHP Logan Jernigan (0.00) allowed a walk in a hitless inning. SS Franchy Cordero (.270) had an RBI single in his only at-bat.
ARIZONA ROOKIE PADRES (1-3): WHITE SOX 6, Padres 4 – CF Michael Gettys, the Padres second-round pick in June, was 2-for-3 with a walk, a steal and two runs scored. DH Jordan Parousbeck was 2-for-3 with a walk and a double. 2B Daniel Bravo was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI. 3B Carlos Belen was 2-for-3 with a RBI. Starting LHP Alexander Constanza allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits and four walks in three innings.
DOMINICAN PADRES (5-15): ORIOLES 3, Padres 1 – DH Felix Suarez was 2-for-3 with a double. RHP Erick De Los Santos (1-1, 1.13 ERA) allowed a run on two hits and two walks in two innings to suffer the loss.
