From the Farm, 8/12/14: J. Ross, Eflin to D.L., Davis Named Player of the Month

Right-handed pitching prospects Joe Ross and Zach Eflin were placed on minor league disabled lists Tuesday and first baseman outfielder Marcus Davis was named Player of the Month for the Northwest League for July.

Ross, a Padres first-round pick (25th overall) in the 2011 draft, went on the seven-day disabled list with Double-A San Antonio due to illness and fatigue. He is 2-0 with the Missions with a 3.60 earned run average in four games (three starts). Before being promoted to San Antonio, Ross, 21, was 8-6 with a 3.98 ERA in 19 starts for high Single-A Lake Elsinore.

Eflin, 20, the 33rd overall pick in the 2012 draft, was placed on Lake Elsinore’s seven-day disabled list with a slight ankle sprain. He is expected to miss one start. Eflin is 10-7 with the Storm with a 3.80 ERA in 24 starts. He led the Midwest League with a 2.73 ERA last season.

Davis, 22, hit .402 for short-season, Single-A Eugene in July. He led the Northwest League in batting, doubles (15), extra-base hits (19), on-base percentage (.465), slugging percentage (.667) and OPS (1.135) in July. He finished second in hits (41) and total bases (68) while finishing fourth in homers (four).

Davis is hitting .337 on the season with seven homers and 29 RBIs in 49 games for the Emeralds. He has a .429 on-base percentage and .577 slugging percentage for a 1.007 OPS.

ON THE MOVE:  Right fielder Yeison Asencio, 24, was promoted from San Antonio (where he was hitting .284 with 10 homers and 44 RBIs in 117 games) to Triple-A El Paso to replace Rymer Liriano. Right-handed pitcher Matt Branham and first baseman-outfielder Lee Orr were activated from San Antonio’s seven-day disabled list. Infielder Nick Gallego signed a contract with Lake Elsinore.

TRIPLE-A EL PASO (60-64)CHIHUAHUAS 8, Nashville 2 – 3B Taylor Lindsey (.243) was 3-for-4 with his 10th homer for two RBIs and two runs scored. C Adam Moore (.287) was 1-for-2 with his 10th homers for two RBIs and two runs scored. Asencio was 2-for-2 in his Triple-A debut.  2B Jace Peterson (.268) was 2-for-4 with a double and a steal. Starting LHP Juan Pablo Oramas (6-6, 5.42 ERA) allowed two runs on seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. RHP Stephen Kohlscheen (3.10) allowed a hit with a strikeout in a scoreless inning. LHP Chris Rearick (2.89) had a strikeout in two perfect innings.

DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (59-61, 23-27): The Missions were rained out Tuesday night.

SINGLE-A (high) LAKE ELSINORE (66-55, 26-25): INLAND EMPIRE 15, Storm 7 – 2B Benji Gonzalez (.312) was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. CF Mallex Smith (.323) was 2-for-3 with two steals (80 on the season, including 32 in 40 games at Lake Elsinore), a RBI and two runs scored. RF Alberth Martinez (.283) had a double and a triple in five at-bats for a RBI and two runs scored. LF Jeremy Baltz (.233) was 2-for-5 with a RBI. Starting RHP Rafael DePaula (2-2, 7.20 ERA) allowed six runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings. RHP Matt Shepherd (5.17) allowed five runs on five hits and two walks with a strikeout in an inning. RHP Tony Rizzotti (10.80) allowed a hit and  two walks with a strikeout in two scoreless innings.

SINGLE-A (low) FORT WAYNE (53-66, 23-27): TinCaps 4, LANSING 2 – CF Ronnie Richardson (.279) and LF Henry Charles (.236) were each 2-for-4 with a home run. SS Trea Turner (.434) was 2-for-4. 3B Dustin Peterson (.245) was 2-for-5. Starting RHP Ronald Herrera (6-7, 3.81) allowed two runs on seven hits with two strikeouts over five innings. RHP Justin Livengood (3.54) allowed two hits and a walk with three strikeouts over two innings. RHP Eric Yardley (3.42) struck out one in a perfect inning. RHP Ryan Butler (0.63) allowed a hit with two strikeouts in a scoreless inning for his six save.

SINGLE-A (short season) EUGENE (24-33, 9-10): BOISE 9, Emeralds 8 (10 innings) – 1B Trae Santos (.197) was 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs. C Jose Ruiz (.203) was 3-for-4. CF Auston Bousfield (.303) was 2-for-4 with a RBI and three runs scored. DH Jose Carlos Urena (.205) and 2B Joseph Epperson (.222) each hit a solo homer. Starting RHP Walker Weickel (5.92 ERA) allowed seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and two walks with two strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. RHP Colby Blueberg (0.34) allowed a hit with three strikeouts in two scoreless innings. RHP Seth Lucio (1-1, 3.05) allowed a run on a hit and two walks with two strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings to take the loss.

ARIZONA ROOKIE PADRES (12-30, 4-10): DIAMONDBACKS 7, Padres 2 – Starting LHP Cameron Stewart (0-2, 18.00 ERA) allowed three runs on two hits and three walks with a strikeout in an inning. LHP Taylor Cox (3.38) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk with three strikeouts in four 1/3 innings.

DOMINICAN SUMMER LEAGUE PADRES (15-45): Padres 14, REDS 5 – LF Ronaldo Contreras (.223) was 5-for-6 with a double and three RBIs. 1B Derwin Pomare (.194) was 3-for-5 with a homer and a steal. SS Jose Savinon (.307) was 2-for-5 with a triple, a RBI and two runs scored. 2B Manuel Vizcaino (.276) was 2-for-6 with a double, a RBI and three runs scored. CF Jose Sotillo (.193) was 2-for-4 with a steal and two runs scored. Starting LHP Eisler Cordova (1.97) allowed a run on two hits and four walks with five strikeouts in two innings.
