Gonzalez joins his brother

The Padres officially promoted Edgar Gonzalez to the Big Leagues on Monday. He joins younger brother Adrian on the Padres roster.

The Padres purchased Edgar Gonzalez's contract from Triple-A Portland after they designated utilityman Callix Crabbe for assignment.

Although Edgar is nearly four years older than Adrian, this is his first regular-season assignment in the Major Leagues. He is a career .297 hitter in nine minor league seasons.

Edgar Gonzalez, 29, batted .293 with four home runs in 27 games with Portland this year. He played first base, second base, third base, left field, right field and designated hitter.

Edgar Gonzalez signed with the Padres last winter as a nonroster invitee and spent spring training in Big League camp. He has played with his brother before, both in spring training and in the Mexican winter league.
