This date in Padres history: May 17

2001: Four Padres hit home runs off Mets right-hander Steve Trachsel in the third inning of a 15-3 victory at Shea Stadium. Shortstop Alex Arias, left fielder Rickey Henderson, right fielder Bubba Trammell and first baseman Ryan Klesko all connect in the seven-run inning as Trachsel becomes the first Mets pitcher to allow four home runs in one inning.

1984: The Padres set a club record with seven stolen bases, including five by Alan Wiggins, in a 5-4 victory over Montreal at Jack Murphy Stadium.

1977: The Padres trade relief pitcher Butch Metzger, the previous season's co-Rookie of the Year, to the St. Louis Cardinals for pitcher John D'Acquisto and third baseman Pat Scanlon. The same day brings a 23-6 los to the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, the most runs ever against the Padres.

1974: First baseman Nate Colbert hits a grand slam off Ron Bryant to help the Padres to a 7-3 victory over the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park. It's Colbert's fifth grand slam as a Padre and the team's first since Sept. 7, 1972.
