Padres 9, Pirates 6

Two in a row, nice.

Like a microwave, Adrian Gonzalez has gotten hot quickly. After going 3-for-5 with a double, two home runs, four RBI and three runsin the Padres' victory Saturday night at Pittsburgh, Gonzalez is 6-for-11 with three home runs, seven RBI and five runs in the series.

Check out the game story at padres.com.

It marks the first time in three weeks that the Padres have won consecutive games. It last happened July 4-5 at Arizona.

A few random notes from the weekend:

  • Catcher Nick Hundley hit his first Major League home runs. Congrats.
  • Trevor Hoffman threw one pitch to squelch a late Pirates rally and earn his 20th save of 2008. He now has 14 seasons of at least 20 saves, a Major League record. He had shared the previous record of 13 seasons with Lee Smith.
  • Kevin Kouzmanoff has 13 RBI since the All-Star break, second in the National League.
  • Scott Hairston has hit .365 with seven home runs this month. His slugging average of .885 is best in the Big Leagues in July.
  • The Padres have won their past two games 9-6 and 6-4. It's only the second time in 2008 that they have scored at least six runs in back-to-back games. The first time, June 2-3 at the Chicago Cubs, they lost both games (7-6 and 9-6). Winning is better.

Back at 'em quickly today. It's a 10:35 a.m. PDT start at PNC Park.
