Padres claim pitcher

The Padres added a pitcher on Friday by claiming right-hander Virgil Vasquez away from the Boston Red Sox on waivers.

Vasquez was property of the Red Sox but had not actually pitched in the organization. He was claimed by Boston on October 28 after spending the season in the Detroit Tigers chain. Vasquez, 26, was 12-12 with a 4.81 ERA at Triple-A Toledo.
