2008: Daniel Ortmeier delivers a two-out, walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the ninth against RHP Heath Bell to lift the Giants to a 1-0 victory over the Padres at AT&T Park.
2007: RHP Chris Young allows four hits in seven innings and gets relief help from RHPs Cla Meredith and Trevor Hoffman in the Padres' 1-0 victory at San Francisco. It's the first of five instances in 2007 that the Padres win 1-0 in a game started by Young.
2006: As the Padres lose 10-4 to Colorado at PETCO Park, Rockies OF Cory Sullivan triples twice in the fifth inning. He becomes the first player with two triples in one inning since Gil Coan of the Washington Senators in 1951.
2005: CF Xavier Nady goes 4-for-5 with a home run, four RBI and two runs to lead the Padres to an 11-3 victory over the Pirates at PETCO Park.
2003: RHP Dennis Tankersley, called up for an emergency start, fails to retire any of the seven batters he faces and all come in to score as the Giants outlast the Padres 15-11 at Pac Bell Park.
2002: 1B Phil Nevin hits a two-run home run in the first inning, and RF Ryan Klesko has a two-run shot in the fifth as the Padres defeat the Diamondbacks 5-2 at Qualcomm Stadium.
2000: 3B Phil Nevin goes 2-for-4, but the Padres otherwise are stopped cold by Hideki Irabu in a 2-1 loss to the Expos at Olympic Stadium.
1999: OF Reggie Sanders goes 2-for-3 with a homer, two runs and two RBI, but the Padres lose 8-3 at San Francisco.
1998: The Padres extend their winning streak to four games with a 6-2 victory over the Reds at Qualcomm Stadium. 3B Ken Caminiti hits a three-run homer as the Padres score all their runs in the seventh.
1997: RF Tony Gwynn goes 3-for-4 with a home run, but the Padres lose 4-2 to the Pirates at Jack Murphy Stadium.
1996: The Padres and Marlins finish nine innings without a run, then combine for seven runs in the 10th. Florida prevails 5-2 at Jack Murphy Stadium.
1994: The Marlins score 14 runs in the final three innings as the Padres fall 15-1 at Qualcomm Stadium.
1993: 3B Gary Sheffield homers to lead off the ninth and C Dan Walters delivers a sacrifice fly in the same inning as the Padres pull out a 2-1 victory at Florida.
1992: 1B Fred McGriff goes 2-for-3 with a homer, but the Padres fall 6-3 at Los Angeles.
1991: The Padres open the year with a 7-4 victory over the Giants at Jack Murphy Stadium as C Benito Santiago goes 4-for-4 with four RBI.
1990: LHP Bruce Hurst pitches a complete game but tires late, allowing three runs in the eighth, as the Padres fall 4-2 to the Dodgers on Opening Day at Los Angeles.
1989: 2B Roberto Alomar scores twice and LHP Mark Davis, the eventual NL Cy Young Award winner, has a two-inning save as the Padres beat the Astros 5-4 at the Astrodome.
1988: RHP Mark Grant allows only three runs, six hits and one walk in seven innings, but Rick Reuschel is a bit better as the Giants beat the Padres 3-1 at Candlestick Park.
1986: Bob Welch throws a three-hitter and makes Mike Marshall's fourth-inning RBI single stand up as the Dodgers beat the Padres 1-0 at Los Angeles.
1985: The Padres fall 4-3 at San Francisco on Opening Day. Chris Brown has a walk-off single against RHP Luis DeLeon in the bottom of the ninth.
1983: Bob Watson delivers an RBI single off LHP Chris Welsh in the bottom of the ninth to give host Atlanta a 6-5 victory over the Padres.
1982: RF Sixto Lezcano breaks a 4-4 tie with an RBI double in the seventh inning, and the Padres go on to beat the Dodgers 7-4 at Los Angeles.
1981: The Padres open the season with a 4-1, 12-inning victory over the Giants at Candlestick Park. LHP John Curtis goes 10 innings without a decision. 2B Juan Bonilla has an RBI single and LF Gene Richards has a two-run single, both off Al Holland, as the Padres score three runs in the top of the 12th. Frank Howard gets a win in his Big League managerial debut.
1978: RF Dave Winfield has a bases-loaded triple in the third inning to bring home three runs, but the Padres fall 7-5 at San Francisco.
1977: RHP Rollie Fingers, signed as a free agent in the offseason, gets his first Padres win when the team scores three times in the top of the ninth for a 6-3 victory at Cincinnati. 1B Mike Ivie drives in two of the runs with a triple.
1976: The Padres open the season with an 8-2 victory over the Braves at San Diego Stadium. LHP Randy Jones begins his NL Cy Young Award campaign with a complete-game five-hitter. LF Johnny Grubb goes 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
1974: New team owner Ray Kroc takes the P.A. microphone in the eighth inning of the Padres' 9-5 loss to the Astros, obstensibly to thank the San Diego Stadium crowd of 39,093 for coming to the home opener. Kroc goes on to bemoan the "stupid baseball playing" by his team. He later apologizes.
1973: The Padres muster only four singles against Giants LHP Ron Bryant, falling 2-1 at San Francisco. LHP Mike Caldwell loses despite allowing only two runs and five hits in six innings.
1971: 2B Dave Campbell goes 3-for-5 with two runs as the Padres beat the Dodgers 6-3 at Dodger Stadium.
1970: SS Tommy Dean goes 2-for-4 with an RBI but the Padres fall 6-1 to the Braves at San Diego Stadium.
1969: The first-year Padres improve to 2-0 with a 2-0 victory over the Astros at San Diego Stadium. LHP Johnny Podres, out of baseball the previous season, returns by tossing seven innings of two-hit ball. He also has a sacrifice fly in the second inning to bring home the Padres' second run.
