Padres lend a hand to Little Leaguers

The Park View Little League All-Stars from Chula Vista have accomplished something that will give them a lifetime of memories. On Sunday night, they won the regional tournament at San Bernardino to qualify for the Little League World Series.

It's fun. It's exciting. And it's a lot of work in a short amount of time. And a lot of money.

The cross-country trip to South Williamsport, Pa., for players and their families can be costly and stressful. Fortunately, well-wishers from around the area have been making donationas.

That includes the Padres.

As XX 1090 sports radio, the Padres' radio home, was conducting an on-air fundraiser Monday morning, Padres Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Moorad checked in with a check. The Padres Foundation, Moorad announced, donated $10,000 to help defray expenses for the Park View Little League.

Here's a tip of the cap to the kids from Chula Vista for their accomplishment, and to the Padres for reaching out to the community.

Speaking of tips of the cap, Adrian Gonzalez gave the Little Leaguers a figurative one Sunday. He called the team to wish them well before the regional final.

Gonzalez grew up in Chula Vista, though he and his brothers, including Padres utilityman Edgar Gonzalez, played in other area Little Leagues.
