Padres On Deck: Olivares Homers Twice for Double-A Amarillo While Four More Chihuahuas Connect

Right fielder Edward Olivares, 23, who is ranked the Padres’ №17 prospect by the MLB Pipeline, was 3-for-4 with two homers, five RBIs and three runs scored Friday night for Double-A Amarillo.

Olivares is now hitting .301 with 15 homers for the Sod Poodles.

His pair were not the only notable homers in the Padres’ system Friday.

Outfielder Michael Gettys hit his 23rd homer and third baseman Ty France hit his 21st as Triple-A El Paso had four more home runs in a 7–5 in at Albuquerque. Second baseman Esteban Quiroz (№16) and Seth Mejias-Brean (№8) also homered, giving the Chihuahuas four in a game for the second straight night and 205 for the season.

Shortstop Tucupita Marcano, 19, the Padres’ №15 prospect, was 2-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs to raise his batting average to .281 for Single-A Fort Wayne.

Other top performances Friday:

— RHP Elliot Ashbeck, 26, allowed three hits and no walks with five strikeouts over eight scoreless innings for Advanced Single-A Lake Elsinore to improve to 4–2 and lower his earned run average to 3.17.

— LHP MacKenzie Gore, 20, the Padres’ №1 prospect, had a tougher go in his second start for Amarillo, giving up seven runs on nine hits and a walk with four strikeouts in four innings. His ERA is now 6.75.

— 3B Hudson Potts, 20, the Padres’ №9 prospect, was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run to raise his batting average to .227 for Amarillo.

— SS Gabriel Arias, 19, the Padres’ №20 prospect, as 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs with Lake Elsinore to raise his batting average to .281.

— DH CJ Abrams, the sixth overall pick in this June’s draft, was 2-for-5 with a triple and a run scored in the Arizona Rookie League, where he is batting .426 (the second-highest mark in the league).

TRIPLE-A EL PASO (60–39): Chihuahuas 7, ALBUQUERQUE 5 — Gettys (.253) was 1-for-4 with a walk, 2 RBIs and 2 runs. France (.369) was 1-for-3 with 2 walks and 2 runs. Mejias-Brean (.338) was 1-for-3. Quiroz was 1-for-3 with a walk and 2 runs scored. As for Chihuahuas who didn’t homer . . . LF Boog Powell (.303) was 2-for-5 with a double and a RBI and C Austin Allen (.289) was 1-for-5 with a RBI. Starting LHP Dietrich Enns (5.99 ERA) allowed 5 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks with 4 strikeouts in 5 innings. RHP Kazuhisa Makita (3–0, 1.35) issued a walk with 2 strikeouts in 2 otherwise perfect innings to earn the win. RHP Trevor Megill (3.00) had a strikeout in 2 perfect innings to earn his second save.

DOUBLE-A AMARILLO (15–13, 49–47): SOD POODLES 12, NW Arkansas 8 — SS Ivan Castillo (.344) backed Olivares and Potts, going 2-for-5 with a RBI and 2 runs. CF Buddy Reed (.234) was 2-for-3 with a walk a stolen base, 2 RBIs and 2 runs. 2B Owen Miller (.302) had 2 doubles in 4 at-bats with a walk and a run scored. DH Kyle Overstreet (.261) was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run. C Luis Torrens (.282) was 1-for-4 with a run. RHP Kyle Lloyd (4–5, 4.70 ERA) followed Gore and allowed a run on 2 hits with 5 strikeouts in four innings to get the win. RHP David Bednar (3.86) struck out 2 in a perfect inning.

ADVANCED SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (15–13, 50–47): STORM 4, Modesto 0 — RHP Jordan Guerrero (2.20 ERA) followed Ashbeck and gave up a hit and a walk with a strikeout in a scoreless inning to finish the shutout. 3B Eguy Rosario (.268) was 0-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base for 2 runs scored. LF Aldemar Burgos (.174) was 1-for-3 with a run scored. C Jalen Washington (.220) had a double in 3 at-bats.

SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (9–18, 42–53): Peoria 6, TIN CAPS 4 — CF Jawuan Harris (.185) backed Marcano, going 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and 2 runs scored. 3B Ethan Skender (.350) was 1-for-4 with a walk, a RBI and a stolen base. 1B Luke Becker (.200) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. RF Agustin Ruiz (.247) had a double in 5 at-bats. Starting LHP Omar Cruz (1–1, 4.74 ERA) allowed 4 runs on 9 hits and a walk in 4 2/3 innings to take the loss.
