From the most torrid hitter on the Padres’ most streaking affiliate to a №1 pick making an early name for himself, here’s a look at the best from this week’s Down on the Farm in the San Diego system.

The hottest team in the advanced Single-A California League at the moment is the Padres’ Lake Elsinore affiliate. And the hottest player on the Storm is left fielder Edwin Moreno. Lake Elsinore is 20–11 in the second half to lead the league’s Southern Division. The Storm is 9–2 over the last 11 games. Moreno has hit safely in 10 of those 11 games, going 16- for-44 with four doubles, three triples, four home runs and 15 RBIs. Moreno is not the only slugger in the Padres system drawing attention last week.

Infielder Taylor Lindsey hit for the first cycle in the history of Triple-A El Paso. Catcher Marcus Greene Jr. homered in three straight games for Single-A Fort Wayne. Meanwhile, Cal Quantrill, the Padres’ top pick in June, pitched four perfect innings in the Arizona Rookie League and Kyle Lloyd threw seven shutout innings for surging Double-A San Antonio.

EL PASO CHIHUAHUAS (AAA)

Corner infielder Tyler Lindsey, 24, was 7-for-21 for the week with four RBIs. His second professional cycle came on July 19 against Memphis in El Paso. Lindsey, who came to the Padres in the July 19, 2014, trade that sent closer Huston Street to the Angels, is hitting .298 in 20 games with El Paso since being promoted from San Antonio.

Insider’s Notes: Taylor has increased his versatility this year playing all over the infield. He has hit very well since being promoted to El Paso.

SAN ANTONIO MISSIONS (AA)

In his lone start last week, the right-handed Kyle Lloyd, 25, allowed six hits and a walk over seven shutout innings. His 2.10 earned run average in July is the fourth-lowest in the Texas League.

Corner infielder Gabriel Quintana was 9-for-28 last week with two homers, including a walk-off homer. He drove in six runs and scored six, including a second walk-off run.

Insider’s Notes: Kyle’s best secondary pitch is his split. After starting the year in the bullpen, he’s now pitching very effectively in the rotation for San Antonio.

LAKE ELSINORE STORM (HIGH-A)

In addition to a .364 batting average over the last 11 games, the 22-year-old Edwin Moreno has an .864 slugging percentage for a 1.228 OPS. The Dominican Republic native is hitting .253 on the season with 13 doubles, eight triples, 12 homers and 51 RBIs. He signed with the Padres in 2010 as an international free agent.

Insider’s Notes: Moreno is hitting over .300 with 4 HRs in the last month. He’s been a big part of the Storm’s hot start to the 2nd half.

FORT WAYNE TINCAPS (LOW-A)

Marcus Greene, 21, was rehabbing from Tommy John surgery last Aug. 15 when the Padres acquired him from Texas in the Will Venable trade. The catcher was 7-for-13 last week with a double, homers in three straight games and eight RBIs. Greene also threw out two base runners in as many games behind the plate.

Insider’s Notes: Exciting getting Marcus back to full health. Since returning his bat has gotten hot and he is playing good defense behind the plate.

TRI-CITY DUST DEVILS (SHORT-SEASON)

Left-fielder Taylor Kohlwey, the Padres’ 21st-round pick in the June draft, was 10-for-35 (.286) last week with a homer and 10 RBIs, including a walk-off hit on July 24th. He leads the Dust Devils with 19 RBIs in 22 games.

Insider’s Notes: Drafted out of University of Wisconsin La Crosse, Taylor has shown very good plate discipline early on in his professional career. He has played good defense in the OF and runs very well (4 triples already on the year).

ARIZONA LEAGUE PADRES

In his fourth outing, Cal Quantrill struck out four while retiring all 12 hitters he faced. The eighth overall pick in the June draft, Quantrill did not pitch during the collegiate season while rehabbing from 2015 Tommy John surgery.

Insider’s Notes: Coming off of two dominant outings, he has shown the ability to cut up an opposing lineup. He has a lot of weapons including a fastball that has a second gear and good command of his secondary pitches.

DOMINICAN PADRES

Second baseman Eguy Rosario, 16, was 4-for- 10 last week with three walks and four steals. He scored three runs and drove in four. Rosario has a .421 on-base percentage and 17 steals in 36 games with a .317 batting average.

Insider’s Notes: Youngest player in the DSL, talented prospect with a hard nosed mentality. He is an aggressive player with a plus arm who has shown the ability to steal bases and use the whole field offensively with authority.
