Right-handed starter James Needy and two relievers were credited with a no-hitter at Corpus Christi Wednesday night when the official scorer reversed a hit call in a post-game discussion with the base umpire.

But Needy might have deserved better.

On the sixth-inning play in question, the Corpus Christi hitter might have actually been out at first. But first base umpire Ramon Hernandez ruled the throw from San Antonio shortstop Diego Goris had pulled first baseman Cody Overbeck off the bag.

At the time, Needy was working on a perfect game.

Originally, the play was ruled a hit. But it was changed to an error after the game when the scorer conferred with Hernandez.

Needy, a graduate of Santana High, struck out seven in seven innings while improving to 8–3 with a 2.79 earned run average. Left-hander Frank Garces (1.79) struck out one in a perfect inning. Right-hander R.J. Alvarez (0.29) struck out two in a perfect inning.

Only one Corpus Christi runner reached base in San Antonio’s (55–54) 6–0 win. The no-hitter was the first for San Antonio since 1984.

Goris (.250) was 1-for-4 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs scored. Left fielder Alex Dickerson (.444) was 2-for-4 with a double and a RBI. Third baseman Casey McElroy (.271) was 2-for-5.

Infielder Brooks Conrad was placed on El Paso’s seven-day disabled list while catcher Adam Moore was activated from the disable list.
