Padres On Deck: Hassell, Ornelas, Ruiz, Angeles continue assault on pitchers

Robert Hassell III, Tirso Ornelas, Esteury Ruiz and Euribiel Angeles continued their productive summers in the Padres’ minor league season Tuesday night.

Center fielder Hassell, 19, the Padres’ №4-ranked prospect and now up to №45 in the MLB Pipeline’s ranking of all minor league prospects, had single in his only official at-bat with Low Single-A Lake Elsinore to raise his batting average to .313. He also had two sacrifice flies and drew a walk.

Right fielder Ornelas, 21, the Padres’ №18 prospect, had a solo homer in three at-bats and was hit by a pitch for High Single-A Fort Wayne. The Tijuana native is hitting .242.

Right fielder Ruiz, 22, the Padres’ №30 prospect, was 3-for-4 with a stolen base for Double-A San Antonio to raise his batting average to .259.

Second baseman Angeles, 19, was 3-for-4 for Lake Elsinore with a double, a walk, two stolen bases and three runs scored to raise his batting average to .349.

DOUBLE-A SAN ANTONIO (37–41)

Corpus Christi 6, MISSIONS 3: 2B Kelvin Melean (.172) backed Esteury Ruiz, going 2-for-4 with a double and 3 RBIs. C Juan Fernandez (.233) was 2-for-4 with a double and a run. 3B Allen Cordoba (.267) was 2-for-4 with a run. 1B Kyle Overstreet (.245) was 1-for-4 with a run. Starting RHP Pedro Avila (3.91 earned run average) gave up 3 runs on 5 hits and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts in 4 innings to take the loss. RH Brandon Komar (3.09) gave up 2 hits with a BB and K in a scoreless IP. LH Joe Beimel (3.38) had a strikeout in a scoreless IP. RH Henry Henry (3.74) gave up 3 runs on 3 hits and 3 BBs with a K in 2 IP. RH Dylan Rheault (7.61) issued a walk with 2 Ks in an otherwise perfect IP.

HIGH SINGLE-A FORT WAYNE (36–43)

GREAT LAKES 5, TinCaps 3: RF Agustin Ruiz (.259) backed Ornelas, going 2-for-4 with a RBI. LF Grant Little (.242) had a double in 4 at-bats with a sacrifice fly and a run. 2B Chris Givin (.198) was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run. DH Tyler Malone (.167) had a double in 4 ABs. 3B Zack Mathis (.290) was 1-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch. Starting RHP Moises Lugo (5.64 ERA) allowed 3 runs on 5 hits and a walk with 7 strikeouts in 5 innings. RJH Edwuin Bencomo (4.29) allowed a hit with 2 Ks in 2 IP. LH Sam Williams (3–3, 5.16) allowed 2 unearned runs on a hit with 2 Ks in an IP to take the loss.

LOW SINGLE-A LAKE ELSINORE (34–45)

RANCHO CUCAMONGA 8, Storm 6: DH Joshua Mears (.258), the Padres №8 prospect, returned from the injured list and went 1-for-4 with a RBI. 3B Jarryd Dale (.264) backed Hassell and Angeles with a solo home run in four at-bats with a walk, a stolen base and 2 runs scored. RF Angel Solarte (.290) was 1-for-3 with a walk. Starting RH Levi Thomas (6.75 ERA) gave up 4 runs on 7 hits and a walk with 5 strikeouts in 5 innings. LH Hazahel Quijada (2.25) gave up a run on 2 hits and a BB with 4 Ks in 2 IP. RH Keegan Collett (0–2, 9.13) gave up 3 runs on 3 hits and 2 BBs in an IP to take the loss.

ARIZONA COMPLEX LEAGUE PADRES (8–15)

The Dodgers at Padres game was suspended in the top of the eighth.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC SUMMER LEAGUE PADRES (11–5)

Padres 9, ORIOLES 6: The Padres stole a total of 11 bases. 2B Jose Sanabria (.200) was 2-for-4 with a double, 3 RBIs a walk, 2 steals and 2 runs scored. RF Samuel Zavala (.228) was 2-for-4 with a walk and 2 runs. LF Jose Cordero (.300) was 2-for-4 with a walk, a RBI and a run. 3B Hugo Sanchez (.167) had a triple in 2 at-bats with 3 walks and 2 steals.
