Padres On Deck Players of the Week: Gosuke Katoh, Jake Perez win final honors

INF Gosuke Katoh

Second baseman Gosuke Katoh of Triple-A El Paso and left fielder Jake Perez of the Dominican Summer League Padres are the final Padres On Deck Player of the Week for the 2021 season.

Katoh, who turns 27 next Friday, was riding an eight-game hitting streak until he went 0-for-1 as a pinch-hitter in Sunday’s season finale. Perez, a 20-year-old Costa Rican, was honored for a second straight week.

A 2013 graduate of Rancho Bernardo High, Katoh finished the season with the eighth-best batting average (.306) and the seventh-best on-base percentage (.388) in the Triple-A West. He also made only one error in 114 games.

Katoh was 14-for-31 during his eight-game hitting streak with four doubles, a triple, three walks, two stolen bases, two RBIs and five runs scored for a .452 batting average, a .500 on-base percentage and a .645 slugging percentage for a 1.145 OPS. He had two, two-hit games over the final 11 games of the season.

Perez was 6-for-13 in the final week of the Dominican Republic season with a double, a triple, a homer, a walk, six RBIs and four runs scored for a .462 batting average, a .500 on-base percentage and a .923 slugging percentage for a 1.423 OPS.

Perez finished the season on a nine-game hitting streak, going 15-for-36 with five doubles, a triple, a homer, six walks, a stolen base, nine RBIs and eight runs scored with a .417/.512/.694/1.202 slash line. He finished the season with a .348 batting average with a .486 on-base percentage and a .500 slugging percentage for a .986 OPS.

OKLAHOMA CITY 4, Chihuahuas 1: 1B Patrick Kivlehan (.261) was 3-for-4 in El Paso’s season-ending loss. SS Ivan Castillo (.287) was 2-for-4 with a RBI. 2B Yorman Rodriguez (.323) was 2-for-4. LF Robbie Podorsky (.250) was 0-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored. Starting LHP Luke Westphal (2–5, 5.84 earned run average) allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits and 2 walks with 7 strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings to suffer the loss. RH Ethan Routzahn (0.00) issued a walk in one-third scoreless inning. RH Mason Fox (11.57) allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and a walk in 1 1/3 innings. LH Joe Beimel (6.14) retired the only 2 hitters he faced. RH Jose Quezada (6.10) allowed a hit and a walk with a strikeout in an inning.
