LHP Ryan Weathers

Top-30 prospects Tirso Ornelas and Jackson Wolf, Major League veteran Ryan Weathers and Dominican League All-Star Alain Camou lead the Padres On Deck Player of the Week selections for July 22–31.

The honor roll is completed by Single-A corner infielder Carlos Luis and Arizona Complex League Ruben Salinas, who is a selection for the second straight week.

Both Ornelas (Tijuana) and Salinas (Guerrero Negro) are international free agents signed out of Baja California.

Padres On Deck: Players of the Week for July 22–31

LHP Ryan Weathers (Triple-A El Paso)

In his only start for the Chihuahuas last week, Weathers held Albuquerque to an unearned run on two hits and three walks with six strikeouts over six innings to pick up the win. On the season, the Padres first-round pick (seventh overall) of the 2018 draft is 5–6 with a 6.56 earned run average in 19 starts with 63 strikeouts in 96 innings.

OF Tirso Ornelas (Double-A San Antonio)

Now the Padres’ №17 prospect, the 22-year-old Ornelas was a member of the Padres’ heralded 2016 international signing class. The 6-foot-4, left-handed hitter batted .419 (13-for-31) over his last seven game in July with three doubles, a triple, six RBI, two walks and seven runs scored for a .455 on-base percentage and a .581 slugging percentage for a 1.036 OPS. The surge has pushed his batting average to .301 over the season with 19 doubles, a triple, five home runs and 36 RBI and 40 runs scored in 77 games for a .349 on-base percentage and a .421 slugging percentage for a .769 OPS. Ornelas led the Mexican Pacific League in hitting with a .353 average last winter. He was the MPL’s Rookie of the Year and runner-up in the Most Valuable Player voting.

LHP Jackson Wolf (High Single-A Fort Wayne)

The 6-foot-7, fourth-round pick in the Padres’ 2021 draft climbed to the №25 slot on the Padres’ Top-30 prospects chart this week. He made two, five-inning starts at Peoria last week and was the winning pitcher in both, giving up two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks with 12 strikeouts. The 23-year-old out of West Virginia University is 5–6 on the season with a 4.70 ERA and a 1.205 WHIP over 18 appearances (17 starts). He has 106 strikeouts in 108 innings.

1B/3B Carlos Luis (Low Single-A Lake Elsinore)

The 22-year-old left-handed hitter from the Dominican Republic was 17-for-33 with five doubles, a homer, 10 RBI, three walks and eight runs scored in the final nine games of July for the Storm for a .515/.555/.756/1.311 slash line. Luis is hitting .319 on the season for Lake Elsinore with a .465 slugging percentage and a .854 OPS. He has 25 doubles, a triple, six homers, 70 RBI and 57 runs scored in 83 games.

OF Ruben Salinas (Arizona Complex League)

Prior to being promoted to Lake Elsinore, the 19-year-old native of Baja California was 15-for-38 in his final nine games in the ACL with two doubles, a triple, a home run, nine RBI, three walks, two steals and eight runs scored for a .395/.439/.579/1.018 slash line. Salinas departed the ACL with a .308/.364/.485/848 slash line with seven doubles, two triples and four home runs for 30 RBI in 36 games.

2B Alain Camou (Dominican Republic Summer League)

Signed as a non-drafted free agent in January, the left-handed-hitting Phoenix native was 1-for-2 in the Dominican Summer League. Over a seven-game span around the DSL All-Star Game, Camou went 12-for-24 with four doubles, four walks, six RBI and 10 runs scored for a .500/.571/.667/1.238 slash line. On the season, the 18-year-old Camou is 46-for-141 in 41 games with 27 walks against only 14 strikeouts. He has a .326/.433/.418/.851 slash line.
